18TD48 Mid-Engine Shuttle Car
In 2008, a customer in the potash mining industry was in need of replacing their aging shuttle car fleet. A diesel shuttle car was preferred in lieu of the standard electric configuration for mobility and logistical needs. Underground diesel equipment is one of our core competencies. We were up to the challenge. Hager Equipment Employees worked closely with mine personnel in order to create the best solution possible. We studied the mine’s conditions, the production and maintenance crew configuration, and their mining procedures. We listened carefully to the customers’ specific needs and tailored our design to meet those specifications. Thus, the 18TD48 Shuttle Car was born. Utilizing innovative, proprietary diesel over hydrostatic technology, this shuttle car provides a rugged, flexible, high capacity alternative for ore haulage.
Increased Mobility – The 18TD48 offers four-wheel coordinated steering while in low range for navigating sharp corners and tight spaces. When high range is engaged, only the lead axle steers. This makes long trips between sections more routine. Depending on operator preference, steering can be controlled by a joystick or steering wheel.
Increased Payload – Up to 18 Tons per trip.
Simplified Equipment Logistics – No power is needed on the section to run the 18TD48. Battery charging stations that can be costly and consume space are not necessary. This shuttle car is fully self-contained. Onboard is a 75 U.S. Gallon (284L) fuel tank which provides enough fuel for up to 12 hours of continuous operation.
Increased Visibility and Safety – Every Hager Equipment shuttle car is equipped with a F.O.P.S. and R.O.P.S. certified operator’s cab. Also included, is our proprietary cab raise and lower design. At the push of a button the operator can change the height of the cab for increased visibility or to allow for a lower ceiling. There are four low-light cameras that provide blind spot visibility and a proximity detection system is available.
Onboard Diagnostics and Control – The 18TD48 employs an onboard monitoring and control system that incorporates a user-friendly interface. With the touch of a finger technicians can quickly and easily trouble shoot, adjust settings, and monitor temperatures and pressures.
Maintenance Friendly – Coupled with the diagnostics and control system, the overall design is uniquely simple. It consists of a diesel engine, hydrostatic transmissions, and a programmable control system. This is very similar to much of the agricultural equipment on the market today. There is no high voltage on the machine which allows a technician to service or repair it without needing an electrician. Hager’s proprietary hydraulic wheel units eliminate drive shafts, external brakes, drag-links, and other steering linkage, significantly reducing down time and maintenance costs compared with conventional shuttle car designs.
Since its inception, the 18TD48 has provided a quality system of ore haulage with minimal maintenance or repair. Hager Equipment Company has provided this customer with eight 18TD48’s so far, and we are continuing to work with them to make our cars even better.
